Looking to Boost Data Security? Check the Lost & Found Pile
In the IT industry, we tend to get so wrapped up in high-tech, high-concept notions about data and network security. We go through periods of rapture about the latest software fixes that are guaranteed to finally lock down our networks and prevent incursions from malicious intruders.
But the realists in us also understand that this latest fix is nothing more than the most recent round in the never-ending cold war between those who seek to breach security and those who are responsible for foiling them. The recent findings related to freezing the chips and destroying the defenses of data encryption is a prime example of the treacherous conditions organizations face in terms of data protection.
Not long ago, however, I was talking to a client who admitted that his company sometimes loses computer hardware and never finds it. I didn't have to tell him that given that regrettable situation, the company was essentially wasting every dollar it had spent on data security. As you might imagine, that is a sizeable amount in most large organizations.
I told him that he shouldn’t feel alone in his management nightmares, because his company is hardly alone in losing equipment. All over America (and no doubt the rest of the world as well) organizations deploy expensive and sophisticated protections to their data networks. And then they inflict the most damage on themselves, by not doing the “simple” things like adequately tracking their data-bearing hardware.
Working with a good IT process outsourcer such as Redemtech allows companies to better focus on their core competency, while we help them effectively manage the business processes that are part of our core competency.
